Abseiling
Abseiling is a German word which means "to rope down." It is the process of coming down a rope which is fixed. It is better known to English speakers as "rappelling." When someone performs abseiling, they will generally come down the side of a structure such as a mountain or cliff. Some of the equipment which is needed for abseiling includes gloves, helmets, boots, knee-pads, and ropes. A harness and mechanized descender will often be used as well. The helmet is designed to protect the head of the climber during falls, and it can also protect them from rocks which fall down from above.
The gloves are designed to protect the hands of the climber from the rope. It can also cover the hands during strikes against the wall. Gloves will be used more often by recreational climbers rather than those who are actual mountaineers. Boots are important because they will provide the abseiler with an important grip. Knee-pads may also be worn because they can protect the knees from hits, or when the abseiler has to crawl. The rope is arguably one of the most important pieces of equipment for abseilers. It needs to be comprised of multiple strands, and it must contain a sheath which is highly resistant to abrasion. Kernmantle rope is the strongest type that is often used for this activity.
The harness itself will often be used to hold the descender in place. The harness is crucially important, especially when a descent will take many hours. The descender is a special device that will allow the rope to be moved out in a controlled manner, and it can be done without a great deal of effort from the abseiler. The rope can be controlled with increased or decreased speed. There are a number of applications for abseiling. While it is most commonly used by rock climbers, it can also be used by cavers, as well as adventure racers. Abseiling can also be used by the military or police when they need to deploy or carry out operations in challenging areas.
Additionally, abseiling is also useful in situations where people need to be rescued, but they are in hard to reach areas. Due to the number of applications that abseiling has, it is very important to many different people. However, it can be highly dangerous, due to its very nature, and there are a number of risks which are associated with it, particularly by novice climbers.
